Clear and Prepare for the New YearFresh New BeginningA new year brings with it a fresh new beginning, a fresh new slate upon which to build upon. But we don't always start the new year feeling fresh and fantastic. Most of the time we have old stuff hanging on. We can still be bound by the toxic residue of the recent year, or even many years past, including right down to our childhood.
In this article I talk about how the ancients cleared & prepared for the new year, and what we can do today, to allow our consciousness to open up and spiritually connect with the change of energy season as we turn over to a new passage of time. |
This information can apply for the whole period from September through December, as well as January and February in the New Year. Because we need to give ourselves the grace and extra time.
How the Ancients Cleared & Prepared for the New Year
It is a very natural and age-old ritual and natural inclination to clear yourself, home and life during this time. We feel it in our bones and it runs through our blood. It is like a carry on of energy from our DNA. In times gone past, ancient civilizations and our ancestors around the world had various rituals and practices that they performed to clear energy and prepare for the new year. These practices often had deep spiritual and energetic significance to the people who performed them.
One common practice was the performance of purification rituals. Many ancient cultures believed that negative energy or negativity could accumulate over time, and that it was important to clear this energy in order to start the new year fresh. This could be done through a variety of means, such as bathing, smudging (using smoke from herbs or incense to purify a space), or using crystals or other sacred objects.
Another common practice was the performance of offerings or sacrifices. These could be made to deities or spirits, and were meant to honor and appease these beings. The ancient Egyptians, for example, believed that the gods needed to be appeased in order to bring about a successful new year.
Many ancient cultures had specific practices, rituals or ceremonies that were associated with the new year. These could be religious in nature, such as temple visits or prayer, or more secular, such as the exchange of gifts or the performance of special music or dance. They had a deep sense of the spiritual importance of the new year. For them, the new year represented a new beginning, a chance to let go of the past and embrace the future. It was often seen as a time of renewal, when one could set intentions and make resolutions for the coming year.
Overall, the ancient practices of clearing energy and preparing for the new year were deeply rooted in spiritual and energetic beliefs. They were seen as a way to connect with the divine, to honor the gods and spirits, and to bring about positive change and growth in one's life. And that is something that has carried on to us today.
You might like to honor your ancestors during this time, and be mindful of their energy that runs through you, for it will speak to you and help you clear the air with those you need to, bring dharma and karma into your consciousness, as well as guide your way through the threshold of closing and opening life chapters.

What You Can Do to Clear & Prepare for the New Year
As the New Year approaches, get into that natural mode of mindful reflection and preparation. This can be hard to do in December in our modern lives, because it is such a busy, challenging, chaotic and distracting time in the build up towards Christmas and New Year break.
But in order to really maximize that energy of change and keep connected spiritually, we have to find ways to simplify, peel back and connect. This also prepares up for that upcoming desire to create new goals and intentions and really feel into the new year energy. Many of us feel a desire to hit the reset button and start fresh in the new year.
Here are some tips on how we can clear and prepare:

Here are some tips on how we can clear and prepare:
Physically Clear Your Space
As we approach the new year, it's important to take time to clear out any stagnant or negative energy that may be lingering in our personal spaces and bodies. This process not only allows us to release any baggage from the past, but it also creates an open and receptive space for us to bring in new intentions, blessings, and prosperity.
You might have felt that natural urge to spring clean your home and life from the September equinox onwards. All this leads to the changing of the seasons and the turn of the year. Physically clear and declutter your space by getting rid of anything you no longer want or use. The stricter and more thorough you are, the better!
It's hard to feel spiritual, motivated and focused when you're surrounded by clutter and chaos. And this will only thicken when you pull out and then have to pack up the old dusty Christmas decoration box from your garage and your house closes in on itself. Take some time to go through your home and get rid of or donate old, unwanted items. Donate items that are in good condition and recycle or dispose of the rest.
A clean and organized space brings in a fresh vibe, can help you feel more clear, free and more in control (amongst all the noise) and more ready and receptive for change and the new.

Spiritually Cleanse Yourself & Your Home
On top of the decluttering, cleaning and clearing to refresh your home, spiritually cleanse by opening up the windows and saging yourself, your family members and the whole house safely and thoroughly. Smudging with sage or palo santo is an effective method for clearing negative energy and inviting in positive vibrations.
Once cleansed, add extra energy to your space and with some crystals, candles, music and aromatherapy that amplify the Equinox, Solstice, Christmas & New Year Spirit and magical vibe. Get ideas from my Creating a Sacred Space article.

As you take these steps to clear your energetic space, you open yourself up to receiving all that the universe has to offer in the new year. So take a moment to honor the past, release what no longer serves you, and make way for a bright and prosperous future. You can tap into our own light and allow it to shine bright as we move into the new year.
To go the next level, book an energy clearing or do your own clearing ritual or meditation to rid of residue energy within your energy field and affecting your mental and emotional health. It is important to take care of your chakras and aura.

Time for Reflection
The new year is prime time for reflection, from January 1st onwards. But I find it also helps to prepare your mental space by reflecting and preparing for this change, in advance of it also in the lead up to it. Whenever you get the chance, that matches the rhythm of your life, in your private moments and quiet time, reflect on the past year and one ahead. What were the old themes, lessons and takeaways, problems, challenges and set-backs?
This will help prime your consciousness, just like you would add primer to your walls before you paint them a new color or refreshed coat. You will awaken your subconscious mind that change is a comin' and that you are mindfully preparing for it. Identify areas where you can make better or more aligned decisions and changes in the new year.

Take Spiritual & Self Care of Yourself
Take care of yourself. It's hard to be productive, motivated or even cope as an empath or energy sensitive if you're not taking care of yourself. Make sure to prioritize self-care, including getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and exercising regularly. This will help you to feel your best and be ready to tackle your goals.
Declutter Your Mind
Clearing our energetic space involves more than just a physical cleanse of our homes. It's also important to release any emotional or mental blocks that may be holding us back. This may include letting go of limiting beliefs, negative thought patterns, or unhealthy relationships.
Be conscious of the changes and all the emotions and mental thoughts that can come up at this busy time, and work through them when going for walks or in your moments of respite and self care.

Deal with and Clear Your Baggage
Clearing and preparing also entails acknowledging all the built-up stuff within you. It is brought to its surface and at one's brim by the turn-over of the year.
If you haven't fully cleared your personal life closet of the year or your whole life, all that stuff will creep up with you like overpriced extra luggage at the airport weighing you down at a cost.
And you don't want to cart those extra pounds with you into the new year. So think about whether you are willing to keep carrying burdens on your shoulders, people's energy on your hips and your own personal worries and traumas in your heart?
At end year and EARLY in the new year, be mindful of what you still have to process and release. Self-awareness and self-work is key. Get ready to do deep within, do some shadow work and prepare to reset your life so that you can turn a new leaf over without your head being buried in the sand.

Have Some Alone Time Amongst Time with Others
December or even January usually means spending extra time with co-workers, friends and family and an increase of social events and gatherings. This, for an empath or highly sensitive person can be exhausting to think about let alone get through. In order to cope with this human onslaught, be sure to have moments to yourself, even if it means sitting in your car in the shopping center carpark the week before Christmas (that took you 45 minutes to find and get into) to discharge and recharge (or scream).
January for Aussi mums means school holiday madness. Whatever your situation, find moments to sit in a cafe, lock yourself in a cupboard or take a stroll and blur out the noise and chaos. Take some breaths to yourself and release all your angst and woes. Find ways to calm your mind and warm your heart. Write in your diary. Try to cut the load and simplify your life, home and to do list as much as possible. Reconsider if you really need to vacuum twice or bake three cakes.
When you are with people, say to yourself to make the most of it and enjoy the time together. Enjoy the laughs and comradery, but give yourself some headway and room to move by changing where you sit, leaving early or taking a nap if it all gets too much.
