What are Chakras? The Origin & Meaning of the Term 'Chakras'
The word “chakra” originates from Sanskrit, meaning “wheel” or “disk.” In ancient Vedic texts and yogic traditions, chakras were described as vital energy centers that govern consciousness and health. These spinning vortexes of energy regulate the flow of prana (lifeforce energy) through the body, much like currents of electricity that keep everything running smoothly. They form a major part of your energetic system.

The Main Chakras
Although we have many chakras in our energy field, the 7 main ones you mostly hear about and work with are:
What do Chakras Look Like?
Chakras are invisible to the naked eye, however some people with psychic ability are able to see them through their spiritual clairvoyance. Energetically, they look like invisible mini fans or vibrant, glowing spheres of light. Others may not see them at all but instead feel sensations such as warmth, tingling, vibration, or even pressure at specific chakra points.
As each chakra is also associated with a specific color frequency, and visualizing them in relation to their specific color is one of the simplest ways to connect with them — but your personal experience may look or feel different, and that’s perfectly valid.

The Purpose and Function of ChakrasEach chakra has a specific purpose and function and affects us emotionally, physically and spiritually.
For example the crown chakra, when healthy, helps us connect with God and the Divine, the throat chakra assists in our power to communicate and express ourselves, and our base chakra helps us feel stable and supported. 👉You can read more about the specific meanings of each chakra here (ARTICLE COMING SOON) |
How Chakras Connect with Mental, Emotional & Phsyical State
Because chakras are a part of our auric system, they also connect to our other energy layers, such as our emotional and mental bodies. As such, there is a directly interconnected relationship between our chakras and how we feel mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, and energetically.
Figuring out which chakras are problematic for you helps you work out what is going on in your life and what you need to do about it. It can give you many clues about how you are truly feeling ad being affected by things, especially as an empath or energy sensitive.
When we become more educated and aware of our chakras, what they represent, how they affect us, and how they are interlinked to so many aspects of our private selves, we can begin a journey of self care, awareness, attentiveness and personal development, and beyond that into more profound self awareness and spiritual growth.

How Chakras Get Affected
|
Chakras can get cloggy or dirty, due our own thoughts, emotions and life experiences, as well as the negative energy we pick up from others.
When they become too energetically dirty, they can affect anything, from our relationships, to work life, to our creativity, communication skills, sense of security and belonging, or feelings of confidence, self esteem, and so on. Common causes of chakra imbalance is stress, unresolved emotions, trauma, poor boundaries (for empaths), and environmental energy. |
The Importance of Chakra Care
Caring for your chakras is more than a spiritual exercise — it is a form of energy hygiene that influences your physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. When your chakras are clear and balanced, life force energy (prana or chi) flows smoothly throughout your body, supporting vitality, emotional stability, clarity of thought, and spiritual connection.
For empaths and energy sensitives, chakra care is especially a necessity, that will help immensley. Blocked or unbalanced chakras can make you more vulnerable to absorbing other people’s emotions, carrying energetic debris, or feeling constantly drained. When your chakras are clear, you feel stronger in your own energy, more able to hold healthy boundaries, and less swayed by the moods or pressures of others.
For healers, intuitives and spiritually aware people, chakra care also deepens intuition, strengthens your inner guidance, and heightens your ability to manifest and connect with higher states of consciousness. Healthy chakras act as clear channels between the physical and spiritual realms, helping you align with your soul’s truth and purpose.
By prioritising chakra care — just as you would with diet, exercise, or rest — you create a strong energetic foundation that supports every area of your life.

Clearing Chakras is a Part of Energy Care
Chakras can get cloggy or dirty, due our own thoughts, emotions and life experiences, as well as the negative energy we pick up from others. Some people clear their chakras every day or week, or whenever they feel ts needed. You can work on clearing and healing one particular chakra, or all of them at once.
There are many methods to keep your chakras clear, from simple self-practices such as visualization or using crystals, to deeper approaches such as guided meditations or professional energy healing.
Like the rest of your energy system, chakras can become sluggish, blocked, or overwhelmed by stress, emotions, or external energy you pick up from others. Regular chakra care is part of energetic hygiene, much like brushing your teeth is part of physical hygiene. Some people clear their chakras daily or weekly, while others work intuitively, clearing them whenever they feel off-balance.
